DESCRIPTION. The bolus is a famous tonic which possesses the actions of invigorating qi and spleen, nourishing blood, calming fetus, warming kidney and regulating menstruation. Conventionally it has been applied for the women with deficiency of qi and blood who are suffering from irregular menstruation, dysmenorrheal, menorrhagia and early abortion. Recently, it has been shown that it is also a good tonic for the aged.

The pharmacological studies show that the bolus can increase the cellular immunity, enhance the bodily biochemical processes, promote the compensatory proliferation of RBC, and increase the hypoxic tolerance, cold tolerance and endurance, and serves as a tonic for increasing body resistance. In addition, it can also slow the heart tate, increase the coronary artery flow, decrease the viscosity of  whole blood and plasma, and establish the equilibrium of the cardiac oxygen supply and consumption, thus benefiting the prevention of angina pectoris. The medicine is absorbed promptly but excreted slowly, and exerts no toxic effect during prolonged use.
